Instagram has done it again! Earlier this year they launched an algorithm that placed the most individually relevant content at the beginning of each user’s feed. Checking social media platforms is an hourly, if not more frequent, habit of many people today. They want to know who is posting what, and upon waking up in the morning, they’re eager to see what was missed while in their REM cycles. For Instagram users, it takes some time to scroll through your entire feed, but it is entertaining to see the litany of photos, videos and comments that were generated while away from the app.

However, Instagram wants you to see the best of the best, and is working on a new concept for your feed. Just like Facebook and, more recently, Twitter, have adopted algorithms for feeds and timelines, Instagram wants to curate your feed based off of data collected within the app. Kevin Systrom, co-founder and CEO of Instagram told The New York Times:

Who could have predicted when Instagram first came on the scene five years ago that it would have experienced such skyrocketing popularity. But a platform that has gained over 300 million monthly active users in such a short time clearly made some correct assumptions about the future of social media usage.

Whether due to the increasingly visual nature of social media, or users’ growing displeasure with the bombardment of sponsored content, political opinions, and negativity on some other platforms, Instagram is truly in the right place at the right time with its photo- and video-only offering.

Content marketing is important. You know it, your employees know it, and your customers sure know it. But the difference between content marketing and traditional marketing tactics is that content can admittedly be more time consuming than sending out an email blast, putting up some new signage, or running an ad on Facebook.

Why does content marketing take more time? Because truly effective content marketing (which is obviously the only kind you’re interested in) takes insight, planning, and sharing. First you have to consider the needs and interests of your potential customers to make sure you’re creating content that will be helpful and engaging for them. Next you have to plan how and when you’re going to roll that content out. Finally, you have to actually get that content in front of the people you want to have engage with and share it.
