Facebook announced an update to their Pages Terms that loosens the restrictions on how to run a promotion on their platform. Page admins are no longer limited to 3rd party applications when launching promotions on Facebook. Promotions can now be “administered directly on the Page Timeline and in apps on Facebook”.

According to the announcement, businesses can now:

  • Collect entries by having users post on the Page or comment/like a Page post
  • Collect entries by having users message the Page
  • Use likes as a voting mechanism

Important to keep in mind: Businesses still can’t ask users to enter a contest by sharing or posting something on their personal Timeline. .

When you’re starting out in content and social media marketing for your small business, the creation and set-up processes can be a little daunting for those without much design experience or resources.

We’ve talked before about how important it is to periodically create attractive, shareable content to put out on your social media profiles to keep them fresh, but how can you make sure those content pieces reflect well on your brand from a design perspective?

Similarly, our recent series on properly setting up your social profiles highlighted the importance of making these platforms look inviting and eye-catching. And while it’s easy to make your Facebook page look great with tools from Pagemodo, what about Google+, Twitter, and LinkedIn? (Hint: those links take you to cheat sheets.)

What began innocently enough in 2007 with a single Twitter user named Chris Messina (Mashable) has since been become ubiquitous in digital communication (and even in live conversation by some, god forbid).

We’re talking about the humble #hashtag, of course. Originally the tool of Twitter users alone, this system of topic organization has since spread into other platforms. Of course, in platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, hashtags actually perform a function when clicked on, taking you to a feed of some sort about that particular topic. On Facebook, however, they have remained a sort of conversational tick used in photo captions and status updates to add comedy or context. (Just as an example, #MyBiggestFacebookPostingPetPeeveIsHashtagging.)

Although Facebook remains by far the most popular social network, that popularity is not without some complaints. One of the most common gripes users have with Faceobok is that it is constantly changing and evolving without much warning – if any. And while everyone probably understands that technology will always come with changes, that doesn’t always take away the frustration of discovering the tool you’d set up to your specifications and learned your way around has changed, yet again.

If you’re reading this blog right now, you probably already know that social media is an incredibly important marketing arena for small business owners. But knowing that you should be doing something, and having the time and resources to do it are two very different things.

We’ve shared hundreds of articles offering advice on how to create a successful social media presence. But sometimes the question isn’t how, but when?

We have observed that Pagemodo users who run small businesses are long on enthusiasm for social media, but are always short on time. In a recent survey by eVoice, small business owners reported that the single most valuable asset to their business was time – not their computer, not their website, not their storefront location. We realized that the most important thing we could do right now for our small business users was not to give them more advice; what they really need is more time.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! On a day when there is so much talk of love, it’s a good time to check in on some of the most important relationships in your life. We’re talking, of course, about the people who follow you on Facebook. They entered into a relationship with you by clicking that ‘like’ button, and what have you done for them in return?

If you’re worried that you’ve maybe been a bit neglectful, fear not; There’s a blog post for that! Back in October we talked about some great ways to engage with the people who have liked you on Facebook, to keep them commenting, liking, and sharing with you for years to come. Best wishes to you and followers!

On Tuesday, Facebook announced that it has begun rolling out a limited beta release of its latest innovation: Graph Search. This is a biggie, particularly for small business owners, so read on if you are among them!

What is Graph Search?
The “social graph” refers to Facebook’s immense compilation of information about people and places that interact on the social network. So, Graph Search will take Facebook’s current search capabilities and add extra insights by displaying search results as they related to the social graph. So now, instead of searching for a particular Italian restaurant’s Facebook page, users can enter refined searching like “Italian restaurants in New York liked by my friends.” Or, as Facebook puts it, this new feature enables people to “find information through the filter of their friends.”

As you may have already seen on our Facebook page, we’re delighted to announce that Pagemodo is now a member of Facebook’s Preferred Marketing Developer program! Facebook describes this group as “a community of best-in-class developers focused on making social marketing easier and more effective.”

The recipients of these badges are spread over 35+ countries, and we’re happy to be in some very good company among the other 260+ members of the PMD program.

Badges are given to companies that provide services in the areas of pages, ads, apps and insights. In order for Pagemodo to receive the badge for pages, we needed to meet (and continue meeting) the following criteria:

We’re smack in the middle of the season of giving, folks. If you have been tasked with fundraising for a non-profit, you are well aware that it’s time for that final push. But do you know just how valuable the month of December can be to your efforts?

We’ve talked before about how non-profits can use Facebook for a good cause year round. But as the infographic below from StayClassy clearly shows, December is the time to really dig in and give it everything you’ve got on social media.

Where should you focus your effort?  StayClassy suggests below that your best work should be aimed more at getting new fundraisers (evangelists, advocates), and less on specific donors. Why? Because fundraisers will likely be donors as well, and they will be compelled to reach out to their networks and get you exponentially more donors in the future. Social media is the perfect platform for doing this, as it’s a great way to connect with your followers (engagement!) and get them to rally around your cause and share your content with their networks (social discovery!)
