This Saturday is a big day for small business – it is Small Business Saturday! And while most of you are aware of the special day, you may not be familiar with why this day is SO important.
After American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010, you are likely to know that by shopping small you are supporting your neighbors and community; but did you know that you will also benefit from participating in Small Business Saturday?
Keep reading to find out five ways YOU can win when you Shop Small on Small Business Saturday.
1. For every $100 you spend at a locally owned business, $68 will stay in your community. Source
If you spend the same at a large business, only $43 stays in the local economy. This money you are keeping in your community can go to things like local taxes for schools, fire departments, and community maintenance, wages, farms, and other community investments that help your town become the best it can be.
2. You can create local jobs
Small businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs in your neighborhood. By shopping at local businesses, you are helping them stay open, employ your neighbors, and create a domino effect to help the community as a whole. Residents of a town employed by a local business will take lunch breaks, fill up their gas tank, and shop at local stores on the way home to keep your local ecosystem thriving.
3. Small businesses donate 250% more than larger businesses to non-profits and community causes. Source
It’s pretty simple – when you keep your shopping local, you are giving back at the same time. ‘Tis the season!
4. You can join a much bigger community (of more than 88 million)
Last year, 88 million people participated in Small Business Saturday. Join them and become a Neighborhood Champion! AMEX provides resources to create scavenger hunts, selfie contests, passport-like activities, or kick-off breakfasts. Get creative!
5. You will have fun!
Thanksgiving is the official beginning of the holiday season, and what better way to celebrate than by getting family and friends together to shop all day and support a special cause?
To join in on the fun, Pagemodo became an official supporter of Small Business Saturday this year and has sent our loyal logo bird all over our local Washington, D.C. community to highlight some of our favorite local businesses.
