Happy Social Media Day everybody! ICYMI, June 30th is the global annual celebration of all things social known as Social Media Day. The day was declared back in 2010 by Mashable, and is celebrated in hundreds of locales around the world. The official purpose is to “celebrate the way social media has changed our world – big and small.”

So, what should you do on this hallowed day of social celebration? Here are 5 ideas:

1. Join the conversation about social, on social
There will be LOTS of activity today around the official #SMDay hashtag, so make sure you follow it throughout the day and add your own insights and tips. It’s a great way to find new experts to follow, and make great connections in the social media and marketing world.

2. Take a moment to spiff up your social media profiles
When was the last time you took a fresh look at your own Facebook page or Twitter profile page? Sure, you post new content and engage with your followers every day, but do you regularly check your profiles for freshness? Changing your cover photo, updating your business details, and re-writing your profile summary are things that should be done periodically to keep things interesting (and accurate). And since you’ll be making all kinds of new connections via #SMDay today, now is the perfect time!

3. Think about how social media has benefited your life and/or business
It’s a great day to reflect on the large and small ways that social media has changed things. It’s easy to make jokes about how we all bury our noses in our smartphones and don’t talk to strangers anymore, but think about the larger implications of a connected world and how they’ve affected you. Have you found loyal customers or made valuable connections on Twitter? Has Facebook’s inexpensive advertising helped you grow a business that might not otherwise exist?

4. Share your insights with visuals
Posts that include a visual element get better engagement on social platforms, so help your thoughts about #SMDay get seen and shared by turning them into eye-catching designs. Pagemodo Post Designer is an easy way to make great-looking designs quickly, and share them directly to Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. If you aren’t prone to sentiment, you could also just choose your favorite quotes about social media to design. For some inspiration, check out the designs for a #ThankYouMom campaign that Webs recently created using Post Designer.

5. Make Social Media Day official in your city with a proclamation!
Did you know that you can lobby your local government to have an official day dedicated in your city? What better way to honor social media’s place in your heart than to get an official proclamation for Social Media Day. Not only would it be cool to know that you directly affected change, it would provide a great opportunity for Meetups and other ways for your local business community to get together. Have a great Social Media Day 2015!
